And that's why she remains a staunch supporter of Israel.
Back in the heyday of the Soviet Jewry movement,
Detroit played a major role in putting the pressure on. Rae was in the fray continually.
"We did political lobbying, anything to keep the pressure up," Rae recalls. She had been
in touch with refuseniks and prisoner families and twice traveled to Russia. The efforts
were so successful, she says, the problem really isn't big anymore.
So Rae turned to another need. She was approached by Rabbi Chaim Bergstein of Bais
Chabad of Famington Hills to start a chapter of the Children of Chernobyl. This Lubav-
itch-sponsored program is committed to moving 3,000 Jewish children exposed to radi-
ation from the 1986 nuclear accident to Israel, later to be followed by their parents.
Rae still helps run the local program, which mostly raises money to help fund opera-
tions for the children, I relocation for the parents and absorption for the families.
Israel is a continuing concern for Rae, who has traveled there every year since 1970.
She monitors three different information sources concerning politics and religiously
faxes them to interested parties across the United States.
"Israel is a very important part of my life," she says. 'After my family, it's primary.
