his year's SourceBook could not have been possible without good words from
six very talented local writers who captured the spirit of giving that runs so
strong in our Jewish community. Their mission was to write about these
"Honorable Menschen" in a way that inspires us all. Along the way, many found
they were uplifted as well.
EDIF, BROIDA had a tough assignment.
Her main essay looks at Detroit's legacy
of giving by acknowledging those who
laid the foundations that make our
community so vibrant today. A native
Detroiter, Edie's essay became a personal
journey, with community landmarks
keeping her on the right path. Edie is
retired from teaching and lives in
Farmington Hills with her husband. A
frequent contributor to the Jewish News,
she's an avid reader who facilitates several
local book groups. As a volunteer, she
serves on the board of National Council
of Jewish Women and gives time to the
Brandeis Book Fair, the Jewish Film
Festival and the Temple Israel Sisterhood
Art Fair. She found writing her essay
exhilarating. The more people she
interviewed, the more she came to admire
the depth of their devotion. "They felt
such pride in their contributions and such
confidence that their work would be
continued."
JILL DAVIDSON SKLAR located
"keepers of the flame" in communities
beyond metro Detroit's borders. She
writes about volunteers devoted to
keeping Judaism alive in areas where
finding a minyan, for example, isn't
always easy. And she's turned in lively
profiles of "super volunteers" Celia
Lubetsky and Sydney Weinstein. A
former staff writer for the Jewish News,
Jill is a freelance writer living in
Huntington Woods with her husband,
young son and three dogs. Her work has
appeared in Hour magazine, the New
York Times and other publications.
Meeting the volunteers she wrote about
inspired her to "get off the couch and do
more for others." She's working on
projects with the Jewish Federation's
Interfaith Connection as well as her own
project, the Convert Connection, a
welcoming and support service for those
who choose Judaism.
DEBRA DARVICK is a freelance
writer who specializes in writing about
topics of concern to family and
community. She lives in Birmingham
with her husband and two children. For
SourceBook, she captured the diverse
spirits of Rabbi Steven Burg, educator
Nancy Kaplan and entertainer Carol
Blumenstein. Debra's work has
appeared in Hadassah magazine,
Moment, the Forward, the Jewish News
and several mainstream newspapers.
She's currently working on a non-fiction
anthology of contemporary American
Jews' soul-searing moments of Jewish
connections. For a sample, check out
her website: www.jewishstories.com .
RONELLE GRIER is a freelance writer
who lives in West Bloomfield with
her husband and three children. Her
stories bring alive mentor Cary Levy
and visionary Harry Granader. As a
volunteer, Ronelle made a significant
contribution to the community as a
founder of the Keshet Family Support
