Stern writes with a Yiddish sensibil-
ity in English. He speaks of Yiddish as
a "language that won't let go of irony.
The language is inherently a comic
one, so I try to write funny stories."
His sentences are peppered with
Yiddish phrases, which read quite
naturally. Growing up in Memphis,
he never heard Yiddish spoken. His
father's family was German-Jewish,
having emigrated prior to the Civil
War; his mother's family arrived
later from Russia and Poland,
although he hardly knew them. He
learned only recently that his mother
knows Yiddish, but she never spoke
it in his presence.
Now, he doesn't speak the language
but he can read it. Given his ease of
usage, his manner and sense of humor,
it seems as though the language was in
his soul all along .

About his inspirations, he quotes a
Malamud character describing the
roots of his fiction: "When I think
Jews, come stories." He says that he
can't imagine writing about other
themes and people, although he jokes
about his "Jewish masquerade.
More seriously, he adds, "At this
point in time, the mask has become
part of my face. It won't come off any-
more. When I look in the mirror, it
looks more like me."
What does he want readers of his
work to come away with? "I'm not aim-
ing to change anyone's lives. The truth is
I've always thought of myself as in part
an entertainer. If you're entertained, that's
enough for me. I go for the laughs."
