I do. Molly Cone wrote it.
One of the most creative, insightful
and fun authors around, Ms. Cone
has delivered another terrific collection
of Jewish readings. This work uses sto-
ries to illustrate the Ten Command-
ments. A numoer of these are familiar
(such as the story of the gossiper who
is told to release, then retrieve, all the
feathers in a pillow to illustrate how
words cannot be taken back), but
there are some new tales, too.
One of the nicest stories is about
a king who wants beautiful music.
Musicians come from all around to
play their flutes and violins, but it is
a Jewish woman who provides the
king with what he longs for: as she
lights her Shabbat candles, there is
the sound of quiet and rest.
"Ah," the king says. "The peace
of the Sabbath is the sweetest
melody of all."
NEW ON CD:
Swinging Chai by Myrna Cohen.
(Sounds VVrite productions Inc.,
1999; not yet priced.)
Your first insight into this CD comes
right from the title.
Unfortunately, it's all downhill from
there. Ms. Cohen has a pleasant
enough voice, but the songs here
are all pretty awful. The tunes are
okay, though not especially memo-
rable, and sometimes the lyrics are
downright dreadful:
There ore many special people I
keep close inside my heart
They're the people who have
>----!oved me right from the very start
Some, they look just like me and
others, not at all
Some of them live far away and
some right down the hall ...fi
Ms. Cohen does not write any
original songs, but instead performs
=works by familiar, Jewish children's
artists like Rabbi joe Black, Debbie
Friedman and Fran Avni. If you're-
looking for a good Jewish children's
tape, better to go right to the source
and pass on this CD. Ill
