taught by his children about mitzvot
and " tzedaka organizations." His son
Ahron disagreed, saying his father
taught us everything we know. "
Before the group retreated indoors
to a luncheon in the Hechtman II
apartments' dining room, Edward
Meer was presented with a proclama-
tion by Oakland County
Commissioners Shelley Goodman
Taub and Michelle Friedman Appel.
It included words of thanks "for pro-
viding safe, comfortable housing ...
an unwavering gift for the better-
ment of our community."
The facility will
have a chapel,
library, kosher
kitchen and store.
The Meers' $1.5 million capital
gift will be recognized by signage
outside the new building. Other
naming opportunities have yielded
another $1.2 million from addition-
al donors for areas including a resi-
dent store and snack bar, transport
van and garden.
Damon J. Bradley, marketing and
development director for the Jewish
Apartments and Services, said the
100-unit complex will house a
chapel, interactive library, resident
community room, kosher kitchen
and dining room and beauty salon.
New to JAS apartments will be two-
bedroom units and a health and
wellness center.
JAS facilities include the Lilian
and Samuel Hechtman Jewish
Apartments I and II in West
Bloomfield and the Anna and Meyer
Prentis and Harriett and Ben Teitel
Jewish Apartments in Oak Park. JAS
is an agency of the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit and the
United Jewish Foundation of
Metropolitan Detroit.
With 1,000 senior adults on the
JAS waiting list, Bradley said, there
is much need for the facility. But in
the celebration, he felt a sadness in
the absence of Mrs. Meer, who he
said was "so instrumental in making
the decision" to become involved in
the project. TA
