Hamas Takes
Credit For Murders

Jerusalem (JTA)
The military wing of Hamas claimed
responsibility for the murder of an
Israeli couple earlier this week at a
nature reserve near the West Bank.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud
Barak, who has warned that peace
talks with the Palestinian Authority
would halt if militants continue
their attacks on Israelis, declined to
comment on the Hamas claim until
a police investigation of the murders
is completed.

Jerusalem (JTA) —
The case of the 13 Iranian Jews
being held by Iran for spying was
turned over to the country's judicia-
ry for trial, according to the Tehran
Times. The 13, arrested in March,
are being charged with spying for
Israel and the United States.

Israel To Help
Maccabiah Victims

Jerusalem (JTA) —
Israel agreed Aug. 31 to help corn-
pensate Australian athletes who were
injured in a bridge collapse two
years ago at the start of the
Maccabiah Games in Ramat Gan.
The Finance Ministry, which did
not indicate the size of the pay-
ments, added that the move "does
not mean the state admits responsi-
bility for the disaster."
Four Australian athletes died and
70 others were injured in the July
1997 tragedy.

Jordan Clamps
Down On Hamas

Jerusalem (JTA) —
Jordan closed down Hamas offices
in Amman and arrested several
members of the group Aug. 30. The
move, long sought after by Israel,
came two days before U.S. Secretary
of State Madeleine Albright is
scheduled to arrive in the region.

Terrorist Convicted
In Bombings

Jerusalem (JTA) —
An Israeli military court convicted a
Hamas terrorist of involvement in
two suicide bomb attacks in
Jerusalem in 1997.
The prosecutor in the case asked
the court Aug. 30 to sentence
Ahmer El-Zibben of Nablus to 21
consecutive life sentences, one for
each of the victims killed in the
Machane Yehuda market and Ben
Yehuda pedestrian mall attacks.

Huge Mall Opens
In Haifa

Haifa (JTA) —
A mall that is being touted as the
largest shopping center in the
Middle East opened here last week.
The Grand Canyon Shopping
Center houses 170 stores and has
parking for 3,000 cars.

Orthodox Jews

New York (JTA) —
Orthodox Jews in the Boro Park
neighborhood of Brooklyn protest-
ed after police shot to death a mem-
ber of their community.
Officers fired at least 12 shots Aug.
30 at Gideon Busch after he struck a
police sergeant with a hammer, police
officials said. Several hundred mem-
bers of the community later gathered
in the streets, some chanting, "Jewish
blood is not cheap."
Police were summoned after a
911 report that Busch, who is
described as being emotionally dis-
turbed, was threatening Jewish chil-
dren while loudly singing a Jewish
song.

Hate Crimes Occur
In California

Los Angeles (JTA) —
In what police are describing as an
anti-Semitic attack, three teenagers
are accused of throwing a Molotov
cocktail at the home of a judge. The
three, who were charged with ter-
rorism, arson and committing a
hate crime, thought Judge Jack
Komar is Jewish, although he is
Catholic, police said.
In a second anti-Semitic incident
Monday in California, swastikas
were scrawled on the walls of a
Jewish day-care center in San
