Whether or not he kicks against
Notre Dame, its clear that Epstein's
rehabilitation has exceeded everyone's
expectations, except his own.
"People keep on saying to him,
`It's just incredible that you've come
back so quickly,' and, It's really
amazing,'" Judy Epstein said. "But
as far as Hayden's concerned, it's
just what he did. There was nothing
remarkable about it. He got injured
and he rehabbed and now he's back
... He would love it to be down-
played ... I think he just wants to
get past it." 7

Temple Shir Shalom won the Inter-
Congregational Softball League cham-
pionship game Aug. 21 with a 23-10
victory over Temple Israel. It was the
team's third championship game
appearance in the three years of the
league and its second championship.
The win revenged Shir Shalom's only
loss during the season, to Temple
Israel.
Temple Shir Shalom played error-
free ball and never trailed in the
championship game. The outfield
made some great catches and threw
out two runners trying to advance.
Ryan Schneider led a strong hitting
attack with two home runs.
The team consisted of younger tern-
ple members as well as "crafty veter-
ans," such as pitcher Bob Tarnow,
who hit to all fields and didn't walk a
batter all season, and captain Norm
Lynn, who batted .720 for the season.
Team members included first base-
man Jack Sweet, second baseman
Danny Lippitt and David Blum mov-
ing from his normal outfield position
to fill a void at shortstop.
Howard Wintman played at third
base, while Gary Grossman and
David Weiss shared the catching
assignment. The outfield consisted of
Steve Robinson, Ryan Schneider and
brothers Craig and Brian Efrusy.
Shir Shalom had to play over many
injuries this season. There were severe
hamstring pulls (both Efrusy broth-
ers), bruised shoulder (Weiss), broken
hand (Wintman), and torn calf mus-
cle (Lynn).
The league also includes teams from
Adat Shalom, B'nai Moshe, Shaarey
Zedek and Young Israel of Southfield.
The league hopes to expand next sea-
son with the inclusion of other con-
gregations. n
