mid-'30s, listening to Ted Weems and
his orchestra, with Perry Como
singing ... It was broadcast from the
Trianon Ballroom in Chicago.
Suddenly, says Sam, they were
shocked out of their dreamy, stupor
by loud noise and police sirens ...
They ran out and discovered that it
came from the Boesky's down the
street on 12th and Hazelwood ...
where Purple Gang members Harry
Millman was gunned down, and
Hymie Cooper and Abe Butensky
were wounded.
What did Sam, Benny and Oscar
do? ... Went back into the Cream to
listen to more of Ted Weems, Perry
Como and whistler Elmo Tanner ...
then drove to Chicago that night ...
where, for $1, they danced at the
Trianon the next day from noon to
midnight.
MAIL DEPT. ... from Nancy
Bruce in Hazel Park ... "I really love
reading about places that have closed
and the memories we have of them.
Here are two of my favorites: Bon Jo's,
downtown Detroit, a couple of blocks
behind J.L. Hudson's. The best New
York strip steak and a waitress who
never had to write anything down.
Karsten's, on Woodward near Grand
Circus Park. When I was young, it
was a big treat to eat upstairs near the
waterfall and have broiled whitefish."
From Harold Finegood ...- "Thank
you for mentioning about my outfit
in Germany in 1945, the 30th
Infantry Division. A'fellow by the
name of Bob Ellis reads your column
and etclled me. He also was in the
30th Infantry Division. He told me
that there is a 30th Infantry
Association of Veterans that meets in
Michigan three times a year, and
once a year nationally. I attended a
reunion in Lansing in May. I met
with the veterans and widows of vet-
erans. None were in my company or
battalion. One lady came up to me
and hugged me. She thanked me for
liberating her city in Holland. A
Michigan chapter meeting was Aug.
13 in Frankenmuth. The national
reunion, where I know I'll see veter-
ans from my former company, is in
Myrtle Beach, S.C., Oct. 20-24. And
I thought I knew what was going on
in life. Here my old outfit has been
meeting locally and nationally for 55
years, and 1 never knew a thing
about it!"
SEPTEMBER OPENING for the
new Mike Larco Italian restaurant in
West Bloomfield, is just around the
corner ... in Simsbury Plaza, 14 Mile
and Farmington roads. ❑
