hen you go book
shopping online,
you can't thumb
through the vol-
umes, test their heft and smell
that nice, crisp new book smell.
But there are big advantages, as
the premier online bookstore
Amazon.com has demonstrat-
ed.
The Web site offers extensive
reviews, and places for buyers
to post their own comments — the
opinions of ordinary readers, not
obscure literature professors.
And Amazon has a great feature
called "people who bought this also
bought...," which may expand your
reading list.
Amazon.com sells lots of Jewish
books, but it's not exactly a specialty,
and it's easy to get lost browsing the
site's multi-layered pages.
For more specific browsing, check
out the My Jewish Books online
bookstore — sort of a Jewish front
end for Amazon.
_ The idea here is to offer visitors just
books with Jewish content, with enough
information about each to help you
make intelligent choices. If you want to
buy something, a click will take you -to
the correct place on Amazon.
The site opens with a summer read-
ing list that covers the gamut:
novels, memoirs, Jewish self-help
and spiritual books, even New York
Times columnist Tom Friedman's
excellent tome on global economics.
"Ofrah's Book Club" offers more
recommendations, complete with long
descriptions of each book.
Unfortunately, there is some duplica-
tion with the summer reading list, but
let's not quibble.
Then there are a handful of cate-
gories: novels, cookbooks, Jewish mys-
teries and science fiction, bios and the
blaringly titled "Jewish SEX."
There are Jewish best-seller lists,

also buy CDs and gift items.
Sure, you could go right to
Amazon.com and find all these things
on your own. But My Jewish Books
makes it easier, and it gives more
detailed information about the prod-
ucts. This is a nice idea and well-exe-
cuted.
