ou're never too young to be a volunteer at the Fleischman Resi-
dence in West Bloomfield.
Just ask the 10 toddlers, ages 6 months to 4 years, who
visit two Fridays each month as part of the Bubbie, Baby and
Zayde Club. The club began five years ago with one child and
has grown steadily into an informal group. At Fleischman, the boys
and girls enjoy the climbing equipment, a slide and sandbox, as

well as making Shabbat and other craft projects.
The Fleischman residents serve as "adopted" great-grandparents to
the toddlers. "Eighty-five or more years separate the bubbies, babies
and zaydes, yet there is a strong attraction between the ages," said
Myrna Katz, who coordinates the program. "It is not uncommon to
see an elder retrieve a ball, sing a song or engage in conversation
with the tots."
