19. Among those hoping to make
aliya to Israel in 1971 was Meyer
Lansky. His application was rejected,
however, because he was regarded
as "a person with a criminal past, like-
ly to endanger the public welfare."
Nonetheless, Lansky, who with
Lucky Luciano made organized crime
what it is in America, continued to be
a strong financial supporter of Israel
and numerous Jewish causes.

20. Beruriah, often called the "first
female Talmudist," was born in
about 100 C.E. in Yavne. The
daughter of Rabbi Hanina ben Ter-
adyon, Beruriah was the only
woman of her time whose opinion
was regarded as Halacha. The Tal-
mud and Midrash both tell stories of
Beruriah, and there is a famous tale
in which she waits until after Hay-
dala to tell her husband of their
sons' deaths (so that he should not
grieve on Shabbat). She says,
"Priceless jewels were left with me
in trust. The original owner has
come for them. Shall I return them?"

24. The first place in the United
States to be named for a Jew was
Aaronsburg, Pa. Founded in 1779
and located in central Pennsylvania,
the town recalls Aaron Levy, a sol-
dier and merchant who helped
finance the American Revolution.

25. The first Jewish --V show was
The Goldbergs, which starred
Gertrude Berg, Philip Loeb and
Harold J. Stone. Originally a radio
show, the program focused on a
family in the Bronx, N.Y. It ran from

1949 through 1955.

26. The famed Bronfman family of
Canada, founders of the Seagram
Company, opened its first distillery
in 1925, six years after Prohibition
was enacted in the United States.
