well - as other institutions and organi-
zations that help preserve our
Judaism.
Still, there is much more to come.
The lion's share of the parsha is
devoted to, and is mostly identified
with, the bracha (blessing) and the
klala (curse), which can be defined
as one of the moist formidable pas-
sages in the Torah. In this well-
choreographed and directed drama,
half of the tribes are instructed to
stand on Mount Gerizim, symboliz-
ing the bracha, and the other half on
Mount Eival, symbolizing the klala.
The kohanim are supposed to stand
in between the two mountains and
face one or the other respectively as
they loudly recite a litany of the
blessings and curses — mostly curses
— depending on the people's adher-
ence to the laws.
This was meant to serve as a
deterrent to a nomadic people who
never had a place before but were
about to inherit a land and live
under law and order. God wants to
make sure they are ready for the
transformation and doesn't mince
words to put His fear into them.
There is no doubt that this very
dramatic depiction of the notion of
reward and punishment will not sit
well with a great many, especially
after the Shoah. Still, one should not
lose sight of the fact that despite the
untold devastation they managed to
inflict on so many innocents, nazism
as well as Stalinism — representing
two of the arch-evils of our times —
are dead and buried in shame. For
the people of Israel are alive and
well, Am Yisrael chai; evil was pun-
ished after all. 17
