40 Detroit Jewish News
about "relations in Detroit between
Jews and Arabs."
His response that "we're polite to
one another, but there isn't really a
meaningful intergroup activity" was
inaccurate. All Arab leaders know of
the wonderful activities of the Ameri-
can Arab and Jewish Friends since
1981 in the Detroit area. We are a
model of how Arabs and Jews can get
along when there are no political pres-
sures destroying their relationships.
There were 475 leaders from both
communities at our annual dinner at
the Ritz-Carlton in May when we
honored Tarek Daoud and Alan May.
We raise funds for scholarships for an
essay contest where mixed teams of
high school students write essays on
their experiences meeting with each
other. They visit each other's homes
and draft their prescription for getting
along in our communities here in
America.
The Friends group has grown in
size and stature and has been a posi-
tive influence for maintaining good
relationships here in Michigan. We
have fewer incidents in this area
because the leaders in both communi-
ties can call each other friends.

The Arts Indeed
Are Undertapped
We are most pleased to have read your
editorial on the "Gallery of Enlighten-<
ment" (Aug. 20). Our efforts have
been toward reaching the community
with Jewish-oriented art since the
inception of the Janice Charach
Epstein Museum/Gallery in the D.
Dan & Betty Kahn Building of the
Jewish Community Center.
We hope that our future exhibits
will raise the awareness and appreci-
ation of our efforts to all. And we
thank you for mentioning that arts
do represent an undertapped
resource for Jewish education, which
we hope shall increase in our future
programs.

We must acknowledge a very worthy
organization, Meals on Wheels.
It's for seniors who can't cook for
themselves. The group provides kosher
food under a rabbi s supervision, both
diabetic and regular good fare.
The seniors pay according to their
income. All this is under the National
Council of Jewish Women, where the
meals are called in.
The group provides packers and
drivers. All are very dedicated volun-
teers; every day, a different shift of
people comes and gives a few hours of
their time for a worthy cause.
The group also is involved with
programs where volunteers pick up
seniors for different programs, plays
and concerts. Most of the time, this is
done free or for a small charge
Refreshments are provided free. You
have to be on the mailing list to be
notified about events.
It's a great organization. I believe a
little more publicity would be good.
Many folks don't know about it. I've
seen some production from other
cities where they show what is being
