The tragedy of Dr Reuven Bar-Levav brings us to the realization of what can happen when someone with severe mental illness does not have the kind of community support needed. In those circumstances, we all lose. The individual does not get help, lives are lost senselessly, and the stigma of mental illness resurfaces. These unfortunate events bring into focus the great challenge that we face at Kadima. As the funding decreases and greater demands are placed Richard Heiman, president on community based services, providers such as Kadima maintain the responsibility to ensure the delivery of quality services. Critical wrap-around services are basic if an adult with mental illness is ever to succeed at building a new life. While recent media attention may conjure up old stigmas associated with mental illness, it can also bring certain issues to the forefront in a positive way. In this way, others are increasing public awareness about mental illness. Some are working hard to insure equality in obtaining therapeutic services so that mental health clients have the same opportunities as other persons with disabilities. Tipper Gore has made health for people with psychiatric disabilities a national priority by working for them to have equal protection under the law. Additionally, as a follow up to the public policy of deinstitutionalization, the United States Supreme Court has recently ruled that municipalities must take responsibility for providing community based programs to persons who need mental health services. Great strides are being made within the mental health industry, however, there is a long way to go. Everyone is touched by mental illness. If you think about it, you have a loved one or a friend, acquaintance or co-worker who is trying to cope, Janette Shallah Exec. Din day to day, with debilitating symptoms of this illness. How can we help? With Kadima, there is help. How can we meet the challenge together? With Kadima's work, and the understanding, support, and acceptance by our community, there is hope. Together we can meet the challenge. Please join us at Kadima's annual Benefit, Monday, October 11, featuring Mark Russell. We look forward to seeing you there.
