turbed across the highway to syna-
gogues through the Simchat Torah
holiday on Oct. 3.
Temporary footpaths will be in place
on the decks before the work gets
underway. At most sites, the bulk of the
park areas will remain open, while the
work areas are secured with chain-link
fences. All foliage or play equipment
that is removed will be replaced.
MDOT officials met early in
August with members of the
Orthodox community to plan for the
least possible disruptions.
Rabbi Yissacher Wolf of the Kollel
in Oak Park, liaison between the
Orthodox community and MDOT, is
.satisfied with construction plans.
"They called me before they even
spoke to the city," said Rabbi Wolf

"You could see they thought this
out," said Rabbi Steven Weil of Youn
Israel of Oak Park. "It took a great
deal of sensitivity and foresight; They
sought us out, not the other way
around. They were real mentshlicht
(honorable men).
The cooperation contrasts sharply
to the often-bitter public opposition
to 1-696 before it was built. First
announced in 1959, the route eventu-
ally was shifted and numerous
changes and concessions were made
via court cases and Mediation.
The bridge deck parks were coin":
pleted before the freeway opened in
the summer of 1991. The parks
played a large part in keeping the
neighboring Orthodox Jewish neigh-
borhoodS intact.
