A Great Experience

I just returned from participating in the 1999 JCC Maccabi Games in
Houston. I was proud to be one of the 1,500 athletes from 25 cities and
countries around the world.
As a second-year participant, I was still quite unsure of what to expect.
Honestly, I envisioned hearing people communicate with different accents,
saying "Shalom y'all" while wearing cowboy boots and hats. All kidding
aside, I encountered warm, southern hospitality:
The Houston community did a remarkable job planning and hosting the
games. The opening ceremonies were held at the beautiful campus of the
University of Houston. Though the arena was smaller than the Palace of
Auburn Hills, it was filled with an unbelievable amount of spirit and excite-
ment.
The Jewish athletes filled the arena ready to participate in a week of
sports, cultural events and developing new friendships.
Each athlete wanted to experience something different and, of course, all
wanted to bring home a medal. I was one of the many who experienced this
accomplishment. True it wasn't the Olympics, but to me it was a medal for
the Jewish community of Detroit. I would like to pass the word to other
Jewish teens in our community to get involved and to participate in the
JCC Maccabi Games in 2000 and beyond.
As a member of the Detroit delegation, I would like to thank the count-
less volunteers, coaches and host families who helped make this year's
Maccabi a great experience for all of us. I was fortunate to be hosted by a
caring and loving host family.
Many of the athletes now have families in Houston that they can call
their own. The commitment froin all those involved helped make the 1999
JCC Maccabi Games a spectacular week for me and the other athletes.

14, is the son of Janice and Michael Lachman of Farmington
Hills. He was a member of the Detroit Maccabi tennis delegation for the second
straight year, earning a bronze medal in singles competition.

they won medals in four events. Greg
Heimlich won three medals, two as
part of a combined relay team with
swimmers from other cities.
The JCC Maccabi Games, spon-
sored by the Jewish Community
Centers Association of North
America, were begun in 1982 for
Djewish teens 13 to 16. They are
designed to offer competition in vari-
ous disciplines, spark new friendships
and build Jewish identity.
Echoing the feelings of other
. Detroit coaches, Roger Black said his
table tennis team, which competed in
Houston, "carried on the Detroit
Maccabi tradition of intense, friendly
,ycompetition.

Corrections

Last week's results from Houston
should have included that Reva
Gorbaty won a gold medal in 15-to-
16-year-old bowling.

Also in Houston, Scott Lachman
won a bronze medal in 14-year-old
boys tennis, winning 7-6, 7-6 in 110-
degree heat.
