Start the New Year
with something
on the side!

Native Americans call their missing
children. At age 43, the author, who
was raised Jewish in New York, learned
that her roots were Navajo and that
she was stolen from the hospital in
infancy and put up for adoption. She
then moved to a reservation, exploring
themes of faith, family and idenrim
• City of One by Francine Cournos
portrays loss and, ultimately, triumph
after a difficult childhood. The
author's father died when she was 3
and her mother died when she was 11,
and she entered the foster care system.
With sensitivity and candor, Cournos
describes the events large and small in
her life. Now a wife and mother, the
author is a professor of clinical psychi-
atry at Columbia University and does
a lot of work with children who have
lost their parents to AIDS.
• A Rabbi and His Dream: Building
the Brother-hood Synagogue by Rabbi
Irving J. Block (Ktav) is the story of the
life and work of Rabbi Block, who
founded the Brotherhood Synagogue in
1954, which at first shared its space
with a Presbyterian congregation.
