U.N. To Start
On Yom Kippur

New York (JTA)
The United Nations
refused a request to move the start of
the U.N.'s General Assembly from the
Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.
In a response to the American
Jewish Congress, U.N. Secretary-
General Kofi Annan said that only the
General Assembly itself could revise
the Sept. 20 date. Annan also apolo-
gized for any "discomfort that the
decision of the General Assembly may
have caused you and members of the
Jewish faith around the world."
President Bill. Clinton has agreed to
skip the opening session "out of
respect for the Jewish residents of the
New York area," said a U.S. official.

Jerusalem (JTA) — An Israeli court
acquitted a Jewish settler of charges he
killed a Palestinian boy in 1996.
In making the decision in the case
of Nahum Korman, the security coor-
dinator for the Jewish settlement of
Mevo Beitar, the judge cited contra-
dictory evidence given by two chil-
dren. The human rights group
BTselem condemned the acquittal.

Corrections
And Clarifications

The Maccabi base-
ball player on last
week's cover was
Steven Pappas, 14,
of Franklin. His
team competed in
Houston.

Steven Pappas
Last week's Mazel
Tov! story, "No
Longer Lost," should have identified
Jennifer Lantor as Dianne
Mouradian's cousin, not as her niece.
