KM_ Art Galleries Co. Fighting Heart Disease and Stroke n Hoart Assoc Albuquerque, he was asked to be on the original board. He became board chairman in 1990. "I have always wanted to make a contribution to see the preservation, protection and ensure the future of Jewish culture," he said. Growing up in the sixties, he also felt strongly about human and civil rights in general; ADL satisfied the desire to protect not only the rights of Jew, but of all minorities. He returned to the Detroit area, as part of a need for "more Yiddishkeit" in 1992, but said he felt he never really left. Now in the real estate business, he owns and operates manufactured housing communities out of his Town Center office in Southfield. He is ADL national commissioner, serves on the national executive com- mittee and will be installed as chair- man of the ADL Michigan region for a two-year term next month. Don Cohen, Michigan ADL director, said Nodel's involvement with leadership in another commu- nity will bring a different perspective to the position. With his extensive national involvement, Nodel spent a lot of time grappling with the national issues of how regional offices fit into the overall ADL structure," said Cohen. "There is a two-way ongoing open channel between the local and nation- al offices," Nodel said. "There is a structure by which regional leaders can go to the national commission and voice support for changes in poli- cies, or to come up with positions on new policies." Nodel said he wants the Michigan office to concentrate on "core tradi- tional ADL issues - the hate groups." "The Internet has made us more aware of the number and variety of these organizations," he said. "Recent incidents, like the shootings in L.A., have made us acutely aware that they are still active, and thriving." He said intergroup relations have always been part of the agenda. "When I spoke with Arafat, he asked, `So how are the relations in Detroit between the Jews and the Arabs?' "I had to be honest with him, and I said that we're polite to one another, but there isn't really a meaningful intergroup activity We both agreed that it was unfortunate." The dialogue with the Arab com- munity has always been "maintained," but at times the exchange has been more active than others, Nodel said. "I think we have to keep up with what our leaders are doing."
