Volunteers for the event were
organized by Harwood and Pat
Cooper, local store marketing repre-
sentative for McDonald's, and by
Eisenberg, who recruited his wife,
Sheila.
The model planes, using remote
control jets and turbine engines, are
eight to nine feet long with up to
seven-foot wing spans. They reach
speeds in excess of 200 miles an
hour.
In order to transport them from
his home to shows in Michigan,
Indiana, Illinois and Florida,
Eisenberg separates the planes into
sections and removes the wings.
Pilots know he will travel any-
where "trying to find an excuse to
fly," he said.
A fund-raising booth allowed the
2,000 attendees to try their hand at
flying the models. Although the 61-
year-old Eisenberg said "anyone can
learn to do this," the inexperienced
use a buddy box so that an expert
always holds a second control.
A former patient interested
Eisenberg, a retired physician, in the
hobby of model planes. In 15 years
of building them, Eisenberg has
joined three local model airplane
clubs; he included members of each
in the weekend event.
But Eisenberg's own planes always
stand out among the rest. No matter
what their size or color, every one he
builds gets the same personal touch
— the addition of the Hebrew let-
ters chet and vud to spell out the
word ch ai (life).
