utes of the attack, and then escorted
them back to the village school. There
the boys and girls met with their parents
and had a chance to talk about what
had happened to them.
"For most of the youngsters this
was enough, though some needed
individual debriefing."
Gordon admits that the tense con-
ditions in the area have a cumulative
effect on the people who live there
but, she adds, "knowing that they
have tools for coping with trauma
helps them to do so.
Trauma isn't limited to Jews. People
from the Community Stress Prevention
Center and others recently spent some
time in the Arab town of Uhm El
Fahm, where border policemen, called
in to deal with disturbances, clashed
with local high school students. This left
some of the students wounded and all
of them in shock.
Dr. Rony Berger, an independent
clinical psychologist who was part of
the team in Uhm El Fahm, says the
work was tremendously important
because "it gave people there an
opportunity to vent their feelings."
Asked to compare the problems of
youngsters in Uhm El Fahm with
those of children in Kiryat Shemona,
Berger said that they were similar
because in both cases the boys and
girls affected weren't in control of the
situation.
However, there was a difference in
that those responsible for bombarding
the Galilee town were anonymous,
while the border policemen were not,
and hence the anger felt by the children
in Uhm El Fahm was more focused.
The CSPC, described by Dr. Lahad
as "the only institution in the world that
aims to help entire communities deal
with extreme stress," has been active in
other parts of the world, including the
former Yugoslavia.
Several years ago, CSPC wrokers
served as advisers in Bosnia and orga-
nized seminars for Bosnians, Serbs,
Montenegrins, Macedonians and
Croats in Israel. One of the topics was
the therapeutic use of puppet theaters,
art and storytelling to help Bosnian
children to overcome the fears that
result from living in a war zone, just
as those activities helped Israeli chil-
dren.
Writing in the Sarajevo weekly
Corridor, Moslem clinical psychologist
Aida Hasimbergovic declared, "What
we learned has caused us to re-examine
our approaches and will help us give
more effective assistance to the trauma
victims with whom we work." I
