happen, and the goal is to get people
talking and thinking with each other."
Ezra is one of the artists asked to
reveal his thoughts in the documentary.
"Each cross-section of the popula-
tion, each ethnic cross-section, has a
certain facet to it, a certain angle to it,
which enriches the general observa-
tion," Ezra says. It interests me to
work with people like that, to create
and to look and watch their world,
out of curiosity- and in order to learn.
"I think that in this context an
artist has communal obligations
because an artist is like a guide; he is
the shepherd who walks in front of his
flock in the sense that he discovers
things which they have not."
The documentary, shown in part
before its fall completion date, takes
audiences into the artists' studios and
a symposium on art-making and

peace-making. The film also shows
galleries and art institutions through-
out Israel, stressing how works of art
from different perspectives can create
spaces for dialogue and give a sense of
the dynamics of coexistence.
"From the preliminary interviews
came a collage of visions and sense of
identity as Israelis and artists," Phillips
explains. "There was no consensus con-

cerning the role of an artist nor was
there a single definition of what charac-
terizes Israeli art. Rather, there was a rich
tapestry of interpretations unified by the
artists' intense love of Israel. What pre-
vails is a spirit and integrity rarely por-
trayed by the mainstream media."
The companion book to Identity,
Thoughts and Visions examines how
Israeli artists live and work in the
face of terrorism, war and death. It
features interviews, essays and repro-
ductions of artwork by prominent
and emerging artists.
The CD-ROM familiarizes adults
and children with Israel and contem-
porary artists there and features a
game-like evaluation component.
"For the video, I was the director,
and I did the narration," says Phillips,
who took on extra marketing clients
to help finance the project and
arranged for original music by local
composer Laura Massaro. "I
made my first trip to Israel
through this program, and I
think I've had a privileged expe-
rience. Being able to sit with the
artists deepened my commit-
ment to ongoing learning."
After the exhibition leaves
West Bloomfield, it will be at the
University of Michigan Rackham
Gallery Oct 10-Nov. 15. As part
of that showing, there will be a
multicultural conference on
coexistence; it is set for Oct. 25.
"I'd like to take the film to the
Jerusalem Film Festival and other
festivals," Phillips says. "After touring
here, the show will close in Israel in
2003, coming full circle. I want peo-
ple to learn from these artists as much
as I have." I

"Identity, Thought and Vision:
Discussions with Jewish, Arab
and Druze Israeli Artists" will be
shown Aug. 19-Oct. 7 at the
Janice Charach Epstein
Museum/Gallery at the D. Dan
and Betty Kahn Building of the
Jewish Community Center in
West Bloomfield. Gallery hours
are 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sundays, 11
a.m.-6 p.m. Mondays-
Wednesdays and 11 a.m.-8 p.m.
Thursdays. Artists Zvit Sharabi
and Ayana Friedman will be at
the opening reception 6-8 p.m.
Thursday; Aug. 19, and Sharabi
will conduct workshops for
Jewish and Arab children during
