Rabbi Syme Earns
Brandeis Award

Rabbi Daniel B. Syme of Temple Beth
El will receive the Zionist Organization
of America's Justice Louis D. Brandeis
Award, its highest honor.
The presentation will
highlight the 66th annu-
al Balfour Celebration
Concert at 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, Oct. 17, at
Detroit's Orchestra Hall.

Syme
of the 18 North
American Jews "who will be most influ-
ential in shaping the future of the Jewish
community in the '90s and into the 21st
century" Rabbi Syme spent 24 years
with the Union of American Hebrew
Congregations, including three years as
senior vice president, before coming to
Temple Beth El in 1996. He's the for-
mer national vice president of the
American Zionist Movement and the
American Zionist Youth Movement and
a former director at large of the Jewish
National Fund of America. He also is on
the United Israel Appeal Board.
Rabbi Syme is an author or co-author
of 28 books. He has chaired the
Coalition for the Advancement of
Jewish Education and co-chaired the
Coalition for Jewish Unity. He has
served on the Memorial Foundation for
Jewish Culture board and the National
Council for Jewish Education board.
He currently serves on the board of
the Ecumenical Institute for Jewish-
Christian Studies and the Karmanos
Cancer Center. In 1998, he was elected
to the board of the Economic Club of
Detroit.
Rabbi Daniel Syme is the son of
Rabbi M. Robert Syme of Temple Israel
and Sonia Syme. Rabbi M. Robert
Syme is a former president of Metro
Detroit ZOA and earned ZOA's
Brandeis Award in 1991.
