The Hall
T
he first evidence of renova-
tions at the community's
largest Jewish agency is
almost ready for public dis-
play and the next stages are being
drawn up.
Handleman Hall in the D. Dan
and Betty Kahn Building of the Jewish
Community Center in West
Bloomfield is on target for a mid-
September opening, according to JCC
Executive Director David Sorkin, who
said the project is around 60 percent
completed.
"The heating and air conditioning
installation is done, and we're painting
now," he said. The next major project
will be putting acoustic tiles on the
walls to better amplify sound.
The project is part of the JCC's $25
million campaign that will renovate
the building and endow programs.
David and the late Marion Handleman
gave $1 million for the work at what
had been Shiffman Hall. Original esti-
mates came in at $1.5 million, howev-
er, and any cost overruns will come out
of the $25 million pool.
"We're now into the final design
plans on the lobby and the kitchen,"
he said. "Now that the hall's done, we
need a kitchen."
The JCC board of directors hasn't
announced which kosher catering
company will handle the catering.
The lobby will get cosmetic
changes to match the ambiance of the
social hall. Later, the library will be
relocated and a restaurant will be
added off the lobby. The lobby and
the kitchen are to be done by January
2000; the former won't be started
until after the Jewish Book Fair in
November.
The rest of the project, including
relocation of executive offices, con-
struction of a second gymnasium and
renovation of the child development
center areas, is in the planning phase.
Said Sorkin: "In the next four or
five months, we should know the final
cost, problems that could affect the
project and in what order things will
get done." Fl
