will the Israel Museum Follow Suit?
According to an article in last month's Forward, the Israel Museum is the
latest institution caught in a tug of war over a Nazi-looted painting. The
work in question is Camille Pissarro's Boulevard Montmartre, Spring.
New York collectors John and Frances Loeb acquired it at an auction
and left it to the American. Friends of the Israel Museum in 1997.
European art collector Max Silberberg allegedly sold the painting under
duress, before he perished at Auschwitz. His 85-year-old daughter-in-law,
Gerta Silberberg of London, England, is petitioning for its return.
In June, the Berlin National Gallery said they would return to Mrs.
Silberberg two paintings that were sold at the same auction as the Pissarro
painting. Anne Webber, co-chairman of the European Commission on
Looted Art, told the Forward that "if the German museum has set the
precedent, it's hard to see how the Israel Museum could do other than fol-
low it and follow it quickly."
But Israel Museum director James Snyder sees it as a more complicated
issue. He told the Forward that the museum is looking to establish "policy
guidelines" for how to deal with looted works and is checking to see if the
Pissarro in question is the same one sold in 1935.
Also, because the American Friends of the Israel Museum technically
own the painting, which is on permanent loan to the museum, "it's not as
if we can do anything unilaterally," he added.
He said the museum will "work quickly and closely" witlithe American
Friends of the Israel Museum to resolve the matter.
