Judah Monis, North America's first instructor of

CELEBRATES EDUCATION

Hebrew, taught students at Harvard College from

1722 to 1760. Monis' Hebrew course was based
on his own handwritten Hebrew

grammar manual that he submitted

to the Harvard Corporation in 1720.

HOLOCAUST AUTHOR, EDUCATOR,

LECTURER AND SURVIVOR

More than any other person, Elie Wiesel is responsible for the

widespread knowledge of the Holocaust among both Jews and
non-Jews. His book, Night, a re-creation.of Wiesel's own

Holocaust experiences, is the first account many people have

read concerning the Nazi death camps. In addition to making
the Holocaust widely known, Wiesel played a significant role

in publicizing the oppression of Soviet Jewry in the 1960s.
In 1986, Wiesel was awarded the Nobel prize for peace.

FIRST

JEWISH SUPREME COURT JUSTICE

Louis Brandeis, passionate Zionist and namesake of the

Brandeis-Bardin Institute and Brandeis University, was

the first Jew appointed to the United States Supreme

Court. The Brandeis-Bardin Institute is one

of many Jewish institutions named after

Judge Brandeis, the most famous being the

aforementioned Massachusetts-based

Brandeis University, a nondenominational

university run under Jewish auspices.
