he payoff for
four months of
preparation is
almost at hand.
The Detroit Maccabi
sports teams, practicing
since the tryouts finished
in April, picked up their
uniforms in a kickoff cere-
mony Tuesday night in
West Bloomfield at the D.

West Bloomfield. The
contingent is leaving this
weekend for the Maccabi
Games in Columbus,
Ohio, and Houston, Tex.,
which run Aug. 8 - 13.
The 73 athletes and 17
coaches of the Houston-
bound teams were - sched-
uled to leave from Detroit
Metro Airport the morn-
ing of Aug. 6 in order to
have a Shabbat weekend
with their host families.
The competitions in
Houston are baseball,
girls basketball, boys 13-
14 and 17-year-old bas-
ketball, bowling, dance,
gymnastics, softball, vol-
leyball, table tennis and
tennis. On Sunday morn-
ing, a second group of 47
athletes and 10 coaches in
boys 15-16 basketball,
boys and girls soccer, golf
and volleyball is traveling
by bus from the JCC to
Columbus.
An additional 46
swimmers, track and field
athletes and in-line hock-
ey, players are leaving later
for the third Maccabi
Games site in Cherry
Hill, N.J. They will be
competing Aug. 15-20.1 I
