War Hero
Gives Talk

/-"

The American Friends of Arutz-
Sheva is hosting a parlor meeting on
behalf of Israel's only nationwide
traditional Zionist radio station 8
p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, at the
Bloomfield Hills home of supporters
Janet and Arnold Aronoff.
In attendance will be one of the
radio sta-
tion's
founders,
Yaakov
"Katzele
Katz, who
will
explain the
problems
faced by
Arutz-
Sheva
Israel
National
Radio.
A war
hero, Katz
was an
Yaakov Katz
elite com-
mando in
the Israel Defense Forces when he
was wounded during the 1973 Yom
Kippur War. Katz made a vow that
if he survived, he would devote his
life to the security and education of
the Jewish people.
Katz and some friends founded
Gush Emunim and established the
Bet El Yeshiva Center in the north-
ern Judean Hills.
He and a group of Jewish educa-
tors were concerned by what they
saw as a growing lack of Jewish
identity and culture in Israel's
media, since there was no legal
framework in the state to establish
an independent national radio sta-
tion.
Katz decided to buy an ocean-
going freighter and equipment and
within a few months of his purchase
in 1987, the group launched its
radio station Arutz-Sheva (channel
7). The ship broadcasts from 16
miles off the shore of Israel.
Even though the Knesset has
voted to give Arutz-Sheva a license,
the station has yet to receive it. Katz
and the station are fighting for the
legal right to broadcast to an esti-
mated 1 million listeners.
