helping our children do
well in school. We sup-
port them with time
and resources to ensure their success.
But doing "well" and doing "good"
are two entirely different notions.
Where we Fall short is in the sec-
ond category, in teaching our children c"/\
to do "good" — to reach outside of
themselves and to help others who are
in need. Just telling our kids that they
ought to be doing good deeds and
helping others is not enough. They
need to see us in action, responding to
the needs of our families and commu-
nities.
It is essential that families con-
sciously reach out to gain knowledge
and sensitivity toward people of back-
grounds and cultures that are different
from their own. The isolationism that
has been a part of our history will not
nurture the qualities that will help our
children succeed. This is especially
true as the globe continues to become
smaller through communication and
technological advancements. Our chil- <
dren live in a world that increasingly
demands knowledge of, and sensitivity
toward, other people. With this in
mind, we can draw some conclusions
regarding other issues that are chal-
lenging our young people today.
• The breakdown of extended fami-
ly networks, which have traditionally
supported the values that parents pass c/

on to their children, has had a pro-
found effect on young people. The
role of the child within a family has
evolved from being an integral part of
the family's function to one without
meaningful responsibilities. As a
result, our children are developmen-
tally less mature and more self-cen-
tered than in the past. In addition, the me
