he greening of Israel and
now Detroit is an ongoing
process with the Jewish
National Fund. Not only
can you plant forests and
groves in Israel, JNF is help-
ing people to beautify
Detroit.
Every Sunday in August,
the Jewish National Fund
(JNF) is adopting the
Elizabeth Gordon Sachs
Greening of Detroit Park,
located on East Jefferson
between Rivard and St. Aubin
in Detroit. Elizabeth Sachs is
the wife of former DIA direc-
tor Samuel Sachs and founder
of the Greening of Detroit Project.
Lila Lazarus, good health editor for
WDIV-TV, is chairman of the
event.
Volunteer gardeners will meet at
the park at 10 a.m. each Sunday,
working with an urban forester to
beautify the area. The Jewish com-
munity is invited to help. There will
be projects for the children. The work
will finish at 1 p.m. and JNF is pro-
vidina b lunch.
There is no charge to participate
and no solicitation. Organizers say the
only thing people need is to bring a
smile and a pair of gardening gloves if
they need them.
Several family members were
recently in Israel dedicating JNF
forests and groves to loved ones. Sally
and Morton Lewis, who were in Israel
as part of Miracle Mission III, visited
the Morris Ben and Ida F. Lewis
Memorial Forest with family members
and dedicated a namesake family
grove at the Kennedy Peace Forest.
Some of the family members included
Jeff and Michelle Weiss, Michael and
Rochelle Chayet, Scott Lewis and
Nanice Chayet.
