introduced the fortification of British
baby formula with Vitamin D. The
innovation brought about almost the
complete eradication of rickets
among children.

of modern medicine, made his
mark by developing the first effec-
tive drug against the sexually trans-
mitted disease, syphilis. In 1909,
he invented Salvarsan, which he
called the "magic bullet" (the term
has been used many times since).
He established the basic concepts
of immunology and is considered
the founder of chemotherapy.

12. Leo Arons (1860-1919) was
the inventor of the mercury-vapor
lamp. This lamp produces ultraviolet
and blue-greenish light via an elec-
tric discharge through mercury
vapor. One of its most popular uses
today is in outdoor lighting.

biologist at Rutgers University. This
antibiotic, produced using mold cul-
tures, is used in the treatment of
tuberculosis.

16. One of the early researchers
of DNA was Rosaline Franklin, who
died in 1957 when she was
37 years old.

17. Albert Ladenburg (1842-
1911) of Germany discovered the
molecular weight of ozone, as well
as the atomic weight of iodine.

18. The author of one of the earli-c /
est books about atomic energy, The
Atom and Its'Energy, was Edward
N.D. Andrade (1887-1971) of Lon-
don. Andrade also is the man
behind Andrade's Laws, which
explain the flow of metals.

19. Samuel Tolansky (1907-
1973), a member of the British
Royal Society, was one of a hand-
ful of physicists invited to study
rocks and moon dust from the Apol-
lo flight.

20. Arthur Kantrowitz of New
York City was one of the key figures
behind the development of the inter-
continental ballistic warhead.

21. Virtually all of the first large air-
planes and bombers of the Boeing
Company were designed by Bene-
dict Cohn, born in 1913 in Roma- <
nia. Among the aircraft he devel-
oped were the B-29 and the B-47.

vani, who was born in Russia in
1903 and immigrated to Israel, that
