complete eradication of rickets

of modern medicine, made his
mark by developing the first effec-
tive drug against the sexually trans-
mitted disease, syphilis. In 1909,
he invented Salvarsan, which he
called the "magic bullet" (the term
has been used many times since).
He established the basic concepts
of immunology and is considered
the founder of chemotherapy.
12. Leo Arons (1860-1919) was
the inventor of the mercury-vapor
lamp. This lamp produces ultraviolet
and blue-greenish light via an elec-
tric discharge through mercury
vapor. One of its most popular uses
today is in outdoor lighting.
