arrival, a chorus of yelps signaled ris-
ing excitement.
But the din quickly calmed as the
pooches lounged at their owners' feet,
while the human assembly compared
notes on their furry friends.
"Sheltie people just find other
sheltie people," said Anne Isner. So
then what about the parti-colored,
curly-haired poodle named Buttons
that was so distinctly different from
the thick-coated shelties?
Buttons, explained her owner,
Ruth Colvin, has been included in
the Isner party for the last five years.
The dogs, she said, "accept each
other" despite their differences.
In the 25 years since the Isners'

Prince, Anne says the group has
grown and become close friends.
"Sometimes," she says, one spends
the day visiting another while mama
goes shopping" — and occasionally
they hold a sle_epover.
Surrounded by walls Filled with
obedience-training trophies and
Anne's handcrafted needlepoint cre-
ations of faces her husband describes
as "dogs loved and lost," the furry
group climbed on dining room
chairs and donned party hats.
After the candles on Anne's made-
from-scratch, bone-shaped cake were
lit, the human guests and one
sheltie, Avi Heir, offered their own
rendition of "Happy Birthday" to
the tiara-wearing birthday pair.
Awaiting cake and "Frosty Paws"
ice cream, the group sat politely,
with not one elbow on the table. A
couple- of chins, however, did get
dangerously close to violating the
rules of etiquette.
Posing for a group picture, Avi
once again perked up, this time at a
request by the official photographer
Herbert Isner to say "cheese." Avi's
owner, Naomi Heir, explained that
he recognizes the word as more than
a smile prompt.
As the afternoon grew late, the six
shelties and Buttons trailed their
owners ro the front door. As they
crossed the sheltie-shaped welcome
mat, they received Blue's Clues party
favor bags, filled with "pupcorn,"
latex dumbbell toys and m1116-fla-
vored biscuits.
In a couple of days, Cody, Megan,
Buttons, Amy and Avi will receive a
note thanking them for attending
the birthday party. Anne Isner will
write the notes, and Heather and
Misty will dip their paws in wash-
able ink to add the proper signature
to this year's affair.
