hichever Mama or Papa
decided that "Sunday will
never be the same," prob-
ably never spent one in a
close-knit locale with ongoing traditions
like those of our Jewish community.
Last Sunday's lines at the 14-
Orchard Car Wash on Orchard Lake
Road in Farmington Hills and the
congestion in the hardware aisles of
the Kmart next door, proved that
summer Sundays still bring the do-it-
yoUrselfers, loungers, errand-runners
and weekend athletes out of the wood-
work. And that's true even when the
mercury hits 90 degrees with humidity
seeming even higher than that.
During the day, swimmers swam and
sunbathers bathed at the Jewish
Community Center of Metropolitan
Detroit pool in West Bloomfield; in _the
evening more people turned out for a
oncert held at
Dixieland- brirc-
a
Rothstein Park behind the JCC's Jimmy
Prentis Morris Building in Oak Park.
Amidst the cyclists and runners at
Young Israel of Oak Park was a tall
blur and a short blur on wheels. For
all of her school year at Bais Soroh
Schneer Seminary for Girls in
Manchester, England, Rivki Lange,
16, had been waiting for the chance
-to go in-line skating with her 8-year-
old brother Shumly. Now that she was
back, the weather was immaterial.
Peter Krimer, seated on a bench out-
side his Prentis Apartments home in
Oak Park, stared at passing cars and
watched neighbors push home carts
filled with food and sundry purchases.
He watched Jane Romashova, 20, an
emergency staff employee ar the apart-
ments, walking a slow-moving dog.
The black-and-white mixed breed, with
fur too long for the heat, was attached
to a 20-foot-long red, nylon leash.
"It's a favor to someone who lives
here," Romashova eXplained, her enjoy-
ment of the blue skies outweighing her
minding the searing temperature.
Seventy members of the Great Lakes
Region of B'nai B'rith's Zager-Stone-
Tucker-Grant Unit converged on
Jeannette and Jerry Olson's home in
West Bloomfield for a summer picnic.
"We enjoyed kosher hot dogs, an
old-fashioned ice cream man with
music and Good Humors, played the
Newlywed Game, which was a stitch,
and were entertained by an Oakland
County Parks & Recreation musical
group," said Jerry Olson.
It may be hard to duplicate next
year, but we'll try."
