Jerusaleni
is not a joke. Israeli scientists
have discovered a new use
for Viagra: extending the
shelf life of fruit and veget a -
bles and stopping flowers from
drooping in the vase.
A team led by Professor Ya'acQv
Leshem of Bar4lan University, near
Tel Aviv, reported last week that a
dash of the impotence drug Viagra
"causes cut flowers to stay erect and
not wilt for as much as seven days
beyond their normal life span."
The researchers earlier had
found that nitric oxide has a simi-
lar effect. Spraying strawberries
with the gas, for instance, doubled
their shelf life from three to six
days.
"Nitric oxide," Leshem
explained, "functions as a natural
growth regulator which prevents
the emission of ethylene, a gaseous
hormone that causes fruit, veg-
etable and plant ripening, aging
and finally spoilage.
To the professor's surprise,
Viagra does the same as nitric
oxide.
"Both chemicals could provide
the food industry with entirely
new, dramatically improved
processes for preserving agricultural
produce," Leshem said.
While nitric oxide is cheaper,
the team found Viagra easier to use
with cut flowers.
The idea offers a whole new
meaning to saying it with roses. ❑

What is a gabban

gabbai is a lay communal official responsible for maintaining deco-
rum throughout the religious service. The gabbai's
duties include leading prayers, selecting and informing peo-
ple when they are to receive an aliya (call to read the Torah),
pronouncing special blessings for those people receiving an
aliya and saying a blessing on behalf of those who are ill.
The term gabbai originated from the Hebrew word gava, to exact pay-
ment, which referred to the job of charity collector. In the Middle Ages,
the term extended to include other communal officials and came to
mean a supervisor and executive leader. Fl
