shekels — about $360 per course
— you can take advantage of the
school's well-organized, easy-to-use
virtual courses. With the next ses-
sion set to begin in October, the
university cautions that this is the

time to reserve your place.
Some course offerings: The Judean
Desert Scrolls; Jerusalem Throughout -
the Ages; Music in Traditional Jewish
Culture and Society; War and Peace in
the Bible; and The Yearly Cycle.
Once you pay up, each course pro-
vides you with a personal homepage
to guide your study. Multi-media
offerings are woven in with the text
provided by leading Bar-Ilan scholars.
Best of all, the Bar-Ilan folks say
credits earned through their online
university may be transferable to other
institutions of higher learning.
Each course carries three or four
credit hours; to get your four credits,
you do the equivalent of 5 in-class
lecture hours and 12 hours of partici-
pation in discussion sessions.
The classes are not open-ended;
you have to keep up with the rest of
the class, and participate in the discus-
sion sections, which use a computer
bulletin board format.
And, yes, you may have to do
term papers and take tests. If you

survive that, you get a grade and a
regular Bar-Ilan transcript.
Classes don't require an extensive
background in Jewish study, but you
should know the basics. Here's the
way the Bar-Ilan folks delicately put
it: "We would assume you know what -
the Jewish Bible or Five Books of
Moses are, but we don't assume you

have studied them.
If you get lost, you can even talk to

vor of their version of online learning.
