told me he had written that song to
capture that era, which made me
instantly start talking a certain way.
When I got home I said to my wife,

And she laughed and laughed and
laughed and then went, "OK, stop,
write it down."
So I wrote it down, and that's how
it happened.
The same with Linda Richman. It
started with my mother-in-law's infatu-
ation with Barbra Streisand.

another comedian
whom I really
respect, Jerry

JN: Does censorship worry you?
MM: I think Lenny Bruce said it
best. The greatest censorship is an
audience not laughing. Why would
you ever want a government agency
involved. No comedian wants to be
met with stone silence.

JN: How did you hit on the idea for
Austin Powers?
MM: Actually, I was driving to a
hockey practice, and I heard the song
"The Look of Love" on the radio. I
love that song. It implies a whole
world of happiness of the '60s, of the
swinger world.
