emanations brings us joy and
strength; it enables us to carry out
our work in this realm. This, then, is
what Israel means to me. It means a
cultural, national and spiritual center
that constantly imbues my life with
meaning and vitality. fl

in an understanding of their point of
view and a genuine effort to treat
them as equals, may dramatically
reduce the likelihood of violence or
eliminate it altogether."
A change in perception was an
important precondition for the com-
ing together of two brothers and a
similar perception change can help
Israel increase the possibilities of peace
with more of her neighbors.
When Jacob grew and saw himself
differently, the possibilities increased
that he would see his brother as a
partner who shared a stake in a peace-
ful reconciliation. Necessary, too, was
Esau's perception of himself as a "win-
ner" who had a greater stake in peace
with his brother than in war.
Tisha B'Av 5759 has ended. Sad-
ness stayed with many of us for a long
25 hours of Tisha B'Av. Remnants of
Tisha B'Av sadness remain with us this
Shabbat even as we hear the first of
seven Shabbat prophetic selections of
consolation. "Comfort ye, comfort ye,
my people" are the first words of this
Shabbat's prophetic selection.
We seek God's comfort as we move
towards a future of greater possibilities
of shalom. Peacemakers among us
must proper. Enemies must be trans-
formed into friends.
What a wonderful gift it would be
if, between this Tisha B'Av and the
next, peace between Israel and her
neighbors would be expanded.
May the words of the psalmist,
which conclude the Kaddish and the
Amida — "May the Lord who makes
peace in the heavens bring peace onto
us and to all Israel" — become a reali-
ty during our lifetime. f l
