frame Aunt Ethel gave you for your
birthday? It's actually kind of classy
looking in its Jacobson's box. The
bride and groom will be none the
wiser, though they may question your
taste.
• Mind Miss Manners: Anyone who
knows anything about etiquette knows
it's gauche to bring a gift to an engage-
ment party. Translation: the pressure's
off. If you get them shower and wed-
ding presents, it won't be so terrible if
you don't buy them an engagement gift.
And you have an entire year to send the
wedding present.
• Hand Craftsmanship: Make
something. Let the artist inside you
come out. Mom always loved it when
you made presents for her, so why
wouldn't your friends feel the same
way? Putting together baskets of bath
products, or candy or wine work as
well.
For a truly special gift, bring a
camera to the wedding and take a
couple of rolls of pictures. Then go to
a one-hour photo shop and put the
pictures in a small photo album the
next day, which shouyld be months
before the bride gets her proofs back.
But be quick — the timing is the sur-
prise.
• Shakespeare in Love: Write the
bride and groom a sonnet, a beautiful
toast or a song that's just for them. If
you play an instrument, you can even
make a tape. They'll always remember
you as the friend who went out of his
or her way to do something unique
for them.
• Get the Max for the Minimum: A
lot of independent stores that sell spe-
cialty gifts, fine china, stemware and
kitchenwares, discount their products
by at least 20 percent. Get the bridal
registry from the department store then
call around ro see which discounters
carry their choices.
Some good places to try are Studio
330, Sherwood Studios, Slades and
Heslop's. Also check out the Ross-
Simons catalog, which offers similar
products at reduced prices. You don't
even have to leave your house to buy
the gift. You'll make everyone happy
— the bride and groom get exactly
what they want, and you save a little
bit of money.
• Get married yourself: Start
searching for your soul mate now and
soon it may be your turn to plan a
wedding, complete with engagement
parties and showers — and gifts. LI
