be able to stomach his own violence and
given a moral conscience. But Alex is not
able to survive in the world and a battle
ensues to restore Alex to his immoral self.
• Barry Lyndon ( 1975): A visually
opulent adaptation of the Thackery
novel about an Irish gambler (Ryan
O'Neal) moving from innocence to self-
destruction- in the aristocracy of 18th
century England. Kubrick's perfection-
ism demanded that a banquet scene be
lit only by the natural light of candles.
This challenged photographer John
Alcott to develop a new camera lens that
could see through the dimly lit scene.
• The Shining (1980): Not to be con-
fused with the inferior TV miniseries.
While Kubrick took liberties with
Stephen King's novel, the film is a mas-
terwork of terror. Struggling novelist Jack

Nicholson takes a job as winter care-
taker of the Overlook Hotel. It is the
perfect getaway for him, as he wants
to complete his novel. Alone in the
hotel with his wife (Shelley Duvall)
and son, Nicholson gets cabin fever.
Soon the ghosts of the hotel come to
life and Nicholson, possessed, goes
on a murderous rampage. Nicholson
and Duvall routinely had to com-
plete more than 100
takes of a scene before
satisfying Kubrick's
exacting demands.
• Full Metal Jacket
(1987): Mathew
Modine plays Private
Joker, whom we follow
through boot camp.
There, the crazed drill
sergeant puts the
recruits through a pun-
ishing pace, offering no
mercy to one over-
weight recruit. But the
sergeant's screaming
drives the fat recruit
over the edge and into
insanity. Then, in
Vietnam, Private Joker
witnesses death and more of it, and his
humor is stripped away as he tries to
survive his tour of duty. Ironically,
Kubrick's conclusion is echoed in
Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line. fl
