reportedly discarded Vladimir
Nabokov's screenplay (based on
his own novel) and wrote the film
from scratch. James Mason stars
as Humbert Humbert, a universi-
ty professor who boards with
Shelley Winters. But Mason soon
develops a crush on Winter's teen-
age daughter, Lolita, and soon
finds himself flouting society's
morals. Peter Sellers steals the film
as the nefarious Mr.
Quilty.

D. Ripper, fearing
Russian contamina-
tion of the water sup-
ply, orders a full-scale
nuclear attack on the
Soviet Union. Peter
Sellers, as Col. Lionel
Mandrake, tries to
reason with Ripper,
who then commits
suicide. All the U.S.
bombers are recalled except one,
whose radio is disabled. Sellers,
this time as President Muffley, has
to gently break the news of the
nuclear attack to the Russian pre-
mier. When that fails, it is up to
the mysterious Dr. Strangelove
(Sellers again) to find a way for
mankind to survive.
• 2001: A Space Odyssey
(1968): When apes find a black
monolith, they begin their evolu-
tionary path to mankind.
Thousands of years later astronauts
find a similar monolith buried on
the moon. The monolith appears
to be beaming a signal to Jupiter,
and so mankind embarks on a
space journey that will advance
them further along the evolutionary
chain. Nearly 30 years later and no
