Hop To It

Use chalk (or crayon, if you want
drawings to last longer) to make
hopscotch boards on your drive-
way. Ask children to design differ- .
ent kinds — in a circle, perhaps, or
with 24 blocks — then challenge
them to come up with a Jewish
association for each number. These
can be as easy (the number 2 for
two challahs on Shabbat, 5 for the
Five Books of Moses, 6 for the six
letters in the name of Joseph) or as
difficult as you like.

Making The Golem

Unless you have your own cooking
show with plenty of assistants to set
up all your supplies and chop your
vegetables into tiny, perfect little
pieces (not to mention clean up-
afterward), the idea of spending
hours in the kitchen on a summer
day may sound less than appetiz-
ing. Yet little children never tire of

cooking up wonderful and awful
mixtures out of anything — mud,
flour, broken bits of cookie.
If you're in the mood to clean out
your kitchen cabinets, give all the
leftovers to your children OUTSIDE
and have them make their own
recipe for a golem, the mythical
clay man created to protect -the Jew-
ish people from harm. With flour,
salt and water, they can actually
make something that will solidify,
and with baking soda and vinegar
their creature will explode like a vol-
cano.

Good Sports

Here% a great Way to have fun and
learn something, too.
Ask children to study any Jewish
sports hero, past or present. Then
host your own Olympics (but just to
showcase talents — not to com-
pete) featuring the "celebrities." Ask
boys and girls to design uniforms
like the sports legend they have
selected, then give a demonstration
of his or her talent.
