When I entered my synagogue on
Shabbat, aside from the usual siddur,
chumash and Shabbat bulletin, I also
picked up a piece of paper that carried
the title "Iranian Jews Held on
Trumped Charge Must be Freed." It
dealt with the alarming story of the 13
Jews, from the Iranian city of Shiraz,
who were arrested and await trial for
allegedly spying for Israel and the
United States. Both countries vehe-
mently deny any connection to the
group, which includes rabbis, religious
teachers and activists of the Jewish
community.
In order to help these obviously
falsely accused fellow Jews who are
subjected to a modern-day incarnation
of the infamous Beilis case of Czarist
Russia, the Dreyfus trial of France or
the Doctors' Trial in the Stalinist Sovi-
et Union, to name only alew of the
false accusations our fellow Jews have
suffered through history, the paper
suggests a campaign of letter writing
to a number of addresses having diplo-
matic relations with Iran. Among
them, the United Nations, the Vatican
(there are addresses in Washington
and New York), the German, French,
Italian and Russian embassies in
Washington and the Detroit con-
sulates of Germany and Italy (for

the Iranian Jewish community is sug-
