was brought home to me shortly after
Sinai closed. It was relayed by a doctor
who had never practiced at Sinai.
After Sinai combined with Grace Hos-
pital, one of the Grace physicians
started an elective cesarean section of a
woman who had had previous surgery.
As he entered the abdominal cavity,
the obstetrician encountered several
loops of small bowel adhering to vir-
tually the entire uterine surface.
Despite careful technique, he soon
encountered complications and called -
for a general surgeon .
As it happened, one of the Sinai
obstetricians who had just delivered
his own patient stuck his head in the
door of the delivery room and offered
assistance. His offer was accepted and
he remained for the four hours it took
to repair the bowel, deliver the baby
and eventually remove the uterus to `--\
control hemorrhage. During the case,
a second Sinai obstetrician appeared
and offered to Help, as did one or two
of our residents.
By chance, I encountered the
exhausted Grace attending physician
in the doctors' locker room, changing
his clothes. He looked somewhat over-
whelmed with emotion. He told me
that in his 25 years of practice, he had
never seen professional camaraderie
like that. In fact, he said that after
hearing the Sinai physicians hotly
debating issues with each other at con-
ferences and journal clubs, he had
wondered how we had all managed to
survive together through the years.
The answer is that we are family. And,
that is what I will miss_the most. I I
