Principal Bechhofer meets with students
in the hall.
informed young women in the
Orthodox Jewish community," Rabbi
Liberman said of Hanna Sacks. "As
we work toward that goal, the stu-
dents must learn whatever they do
must be done well. We want them to
become solid members of the
Orthodox Jewish community and
excellent citizens in the secular
world."
The Hanna Sacks day begins at
8:15 a.m. and does not end until 5:20
p.m. That schedule was in place
before Bechhofer took the helm,
which left her with the challenge of
fitting more information into an
already rigorous 1 1-period school day.
As a result, electives are at a mini-
mum. Sophomore year, students can
take French, Spanish, accounting or
creative writing. Junior year, the
choice is art or a science lab. The
computer room, installed two years
ago, is used for spreadsheet training
and word processing — not e-mail.
"It's a philosophical decision we
had to make," Bechhofer said. "The
kids are so busy, we really have to
focus on the basics. Job opportunities
depend on math and science."
She worked with teachers to create
a new grading system that helps stu-
dents see where they can improve.
She set up a job fair. She hired a
school psychologist. She established a
student advisory council.
Still, her job is nowhere near corn-
:). plete. Bechhofer feels strongly that
the students need to become better
writers, in Hebrew and English. She
is trying to expand advanced place-
ment offerings — a daunting task
when 38 of your 42 teachers work
part-time.
And Bechhofer, who still finds
time to teach a Torah class, hasn't
even begun to improve on the Jewish
studies program. Naturally, she has a
few ideas.
"I want the girls to make the most
of themselves, whether that is in
academia, emotional stamina or reli-
gious beliefs," Bechhofer said. "I
want them to come out strong." L
