Lawrence St. Pontiac and at all Outlets Great Seats for lone! Farewell Detroit! J RM: He has a big, long list of works that he wants to study as future repertoire for the Met or some European festival. He is always studying new works. Sometimes, he studies new works and decides they're not for him. One thing that's on his agenda is that the repertoire of the Metropolitan Opera should always be expanding, and that means he constantly has to be evaluating operas. (2nd floor) 40 W. Pike St., Pontiac, Michigan 30715 W. TEN MILE RD. Across from Americana Levine used to celebrate religious holi- days with Leonard Bernstein. Can you discuss some of his religious views? RM: The family was very deeply involved in Reform Judaism, and I have the impression that there would be symbolic celebration of major Jewish holidays. Levine spends very little time in formal ceremonies of worship. His female companion is gentile. As I see it, Levine is constantly involved in what I would describe in the broadest, most general sense as acts of worship. He is really one of the Levi tribe making music in the temple. It's that you have to redefine what the temple is. His temple is not the temple in Jerusalem. His temple is not a syna- gogue. His temple is a temple of humanism in the arts. The traditions of humanism and the high arts are fully compatible with the highest spirit of Judaism, and Christianity too. There is no antagonism or adversary relation- ship between what the arts inspire us to do and what religion inspires us to do. JN: What are his current interests? 1.2181oratilo AWARD OF "The 3 Tenors" concerts are attended by people who go to them primarily as an entertainment event. The intention is to make operatic music available to large audiences in an entertaining form with high artistic standards and build a bridge between the pop music industry, which can sink to some pretty horrible depths, and classical music, which can rise to some extraordinary heights. The main reason that the guys are doing it is that they enjoy it. The fact that they are well paid only makes it more enjoyable. CLASSIFIEDS GET IN RESULTS!
