name and that she lived in London,
England. He began his search, not
at the census record bureau, but
with his home computer.
Glass, a Temple Israel member,
has had a little more time on his
hands to "surf the 'Net," since retir-
ing two years ago as an employee
of Farmer Jack. As he began his
search, he logged on to the Web
site www.teldir.com for help.
Among the many Internet family
finder services, this site has an
index of online phone books from
around the world.
At the prompt, he punched in his
cousin's last
name, plus her
city of residence
(London) and
clicked the GO!
button. Almost
instantly, the com-
puter found a
match to the
name.
Glass was then
given an e-mail
address for a third
party who would
help him continue
the search. He began his letter
immediately, explaining his position,
who he was, how he and the
woman he was seeking were relat-
ed, and his desire to track down
his long-lost cousin.
Once his message was complete,
Glass sent it on to the unknown
contact at the other end of the com-
puter. He patiently sat back, won-
dering if he would get a response.
It came a few days later. There
was an e-mail response from his
cousin's nephew, who was able to
provide him with the cousin's direct
e-mail address.
For six months now, Glass and his
cousin have been "conversing,"
catching up on 30 years of lost
family business. Thanks to the Inter-
net, Glass has plans to reunite with
his cousin later this year in England.

Ilene Lee of Farmington Hills has-
n't found any long-lost relatives yet,
but she certainly values how the
computer helps her stay in touch
with family members.
A substitute teacher in Farmington
Public Schools and member of Tem-
ple Kol Ami, Lee says the computer
has become her link to keeping up
relationships with family living out of
town. "I am not good at writing let-
ters, and calling is expensive. But
since I have begun communicating
with my cousins Ruth and Jack
Omsky in Israel, via the Internet, we
are closer than ever," she said.
Lee describes their on-line chats as
relaxed, not rushed. "We can catch
up on grandkids and the small stuff,
which has brought us very close.
We do not need to worry about
time differences, so we can e-mail
at our leisure, and no one gets a

big telephone bill."
Other fun bonuses have been
scanning up-to-date pictures of
the families back and forth and
sending anniversary wishes and
birthday greetings online.
When Lee logs on to
www.netgammon.com , to play
backgammon, she looks for her
cousin in Belgium, as well.
Often, these iwo cousins,
although they are worlds away,
chat, catch up on their daily lives
and play backgammon at the
same time.

Bloomfield say the possibilities are
endless. The two recently posted
photos of their new home on a
Web page, where the first visitors
were Ellen's parents in New Jersey.
Noah and Ellen have created a

us.com , to help others set up their
own Web pages.
