AMIENS,-
ments for the liver disease to which
she ultimately would succumb. She
found a measure of solace by commu-
nicating with a support group on the
Web.
"Becoming a librarian was the only
thing that ever appealed to her," recalls
Herbst's father, Dr. Jack Lawson. "She
had wonderful grades throughout
school and always was an avid reader.
She loved good literature and enjoyed
novels by Thomas Wolfe and Stephen
King."
Herbst, who attended MacDowell
Elementary School and Mumford High
School in Detroit, went on to graduate
from Oak Park High School. She met
her husband of 29 years, Norman
Herbst, before graduation, and they
dated while they were in college.
After two years at the University of
Michigan, she transferred to Wayne
State University, and earned her bache-
lor's degree there. She returned to the
University of Michigan for her master's
degree
Herbst's love for learning was passed
along to the couple's two sons. Bradley,
28, is in a performance apprenticeship
program with the Lyric Opera House
of Cleveland, and Jonathon, 25, is
doing his medical internship at
Bethesda Naval Hospital.
Religion was important to the fami-
ly, affiliated with Adat Shalom
Synagogue. Herbst, the sister of Eileen
Hyman and Bruce Lawson, was a
member of B'nai B'rith before illness
forced her to curtail her activities.
"Linda was very courageous and
never complained," said Norman
Herbst of his wife. "After she died, I
got cards and letters from people all
over the world who had known her
through the Internet.
"More than 100 people were at the
dedication of Linda's Garden — rela-
tives, friends and patrons she had
helped. When we were all standing
together next to the beautiful flowers, I
knew I couldn't have thought of a bet-
ter legacy for a beautiful person." 1-1
