Groner Recuperating

Irwin Groner, senior rabbi of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek, has been
hospitalized for rehabilitation at William
Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak after
experiencing what he described as a mild
stroke two weeks ago.
Sounding clear and articulate,
Rabbi Groner said by phone Tuesday
that his "intellect, speech and memory
are unimpaired," adding, "Doctors
anticipate that I will have a complete
recovery.
On Wednesday, he was listed in sta-

ble condition at Beaumont. He was
hoping to be released by this weekend.
He has been a rabbi at the syna-
gogue since 1959, becoming senior
rabbi in 1967. In 1978, he was named
rabbi for life.
Rabbi Groner suffered the stroke
while he and his wife, Leypsa, were
visiting in Oslo with a friend and con-
gregant, U.S. Ambassador to Norway
David Hermelin, who underwent
surgery last year for a brain tumor and
is still receiving treatment for it.
