Street. Here, 40 Jewish pioneers held
the first Jewish High Holiday service
in California in September 1949.
Temple Emanu-El, located near
Golden Gate Park on Arguello and
Lake streets, is a stunning example of
Byzantine architecture that features a
red cupola suggestive of Istanbul's
Hagia Sophia, antique marble
columns and California-style patios.
There are daily tours of the sanctuary.
The Magnes Museum, 2911
Russel St. in Berkeley, Calif, is named
after the first rabbi born west of the
Mississippi. It has the third largest col-
lection of Judaica in the U.S., includ-
ing Torah binders, North African
objects and early farming efforts in
Palestine. Of particular interest is its
Western Jewish History Center, which
has oral histories of many Jewish per-
sonalities. Call (510) 549-6950.
The Holocaust, a sculpture by
George Segal, was installed in Lincoln
Park in 1984. It has since become a
community rallying spot as well as an
important work of public art.
In Colma, just to the south of San
Francisco, is the Hills of Eternity
Cemetery. The grave of legendary
cowboy Wyatt Earp is here, beside his
Jewish wife, Josephine Marcus Earp.
The cemetery is located between El
Camino Real and Hillside Blvd.

SOUTHWEST:
Tombstone, Ariz.; Simi Valley and
Los Angeles, Calif.
Tombstone was a thriving, predomi-
nately-Jewish settlement in Arizona at
the turn of the century, when Wyatt
Earp kept law and order.
Little is left of the Jewish section of
the Boothill Cemetery in Tombstone,
founded in 1879 and recently redis-
covered. A monument, dedicated in
1984, shows a menorah, two Stars of
David and an Indian symbol.
North of Los Angeles, in Simi
Valley, Calif, is the Brandeis Bardin
Institute. Stretching across 3,200 acres
in a landscape that closely resembles
Israeli terrain is a laboratory for living
Judaism with creative programs for
children, teens and adults, some in
conjunction with Brandeis University.
Actor James Arness, who is not
Jewish, was so impressed with the
concept that he donated 1,100 acres
to the project. Note the House of the
Book, a series of drums of poured
concrete of varying heights. It serves
as a synagogue.
To reach the institute, take the San
Diego Freeway, 1-405, north from Los
Angeles to Route 118. Go west for
about 15 miles and take the second
exit to Simi Valley. The institute is
located at 1101 Pepper Tree Lane.
Call (805) 526-1131 for information
about programs and activities.
Metropolitan Los Angeles has a
population of well over a half-million
Jews, including a sizeable Iranian
Jewish population. Jews not only live
in Los Angeles, they lead it. Some of
the city's most prominent leaders are
Jewish. Movies, Los Angeles' most vis-
ible industry, has been indelibly
shaped by Jews, both artistically and
financially.
There is much to experience here,
whatever your interest, starting from
tours of the homes of Jewish movie
stars to important Holocaust archives
and cultural opportunities. Check out
the Jewish art scene. Los Angles has
many fine galleries that specialize in
Jewish art. Some include: the Michael
Hittleman Gallery, which specializes
in the work of Marc Chagall, and
Israeli artists at 8797 Beverly Blvd.;
Gallery Judaica, which features fine
arts and ritual objects at 1312
Westwood; and the Jewish Quarter,
whose shops and galleries sell Roman
glass, folk art, crafts, silver objects and
antiquities, located at 8685 Wiltshire.
The Simon Weisenthal Center has
movies, lectures, a library, the Museum
of Tolerance and programs promoting
understanding of the Holocaust. Call
(310) 772-2526.
In L.A., look for the Fairfax
Community Mural, located on the
south wall of the People's Market
Building on Fairfax and Oakwood
Ave., to see a sequence of seven
chronological panels depicting Jewish
life in Los Angeles since the 1840s.
They include a scene from Al Jolson's
movie, The Jazz Singer, and Sandy
Koufax's 1964 baseball no-hitter. The
images were painted from 35 histori-
cal photographs.
A newer Jewish neighborhood is
located around the intersection of
Pico and Robertson boulevards. For
the star-struck, check out the Milky
Way, the kosher dairy restaurant
owned by Leah Adler, mother of
Stephen Spielberg. E. T and Indiana
Jones posters decorate the walls.
Corned beef locator: Fairfax Avenue,
and another area surrounding the inter-
section of Pico and Robertson, just
southwest of Fairfax. LI
