He even nabbed an Oscar for The Heiress in 1949. Although Copland's name is inex- tricably linked with American music, Pollack isn't negligent in discussing the NI-composer's affection for music south ( of the border and his longstanding friendship with the Mexican composer Carlos Chavez. What has long been forgotten about Copland — and which Pollack delves into at length — is the compos- er's appearance in the early '50s before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Copland kept his compo- sure under the hectoring of Sen. Joseph McCarthy's minions, but he \vas harassed nonetheless. Anyone familiar with Copland knew he was a liberal, but he was no Communist. In fact, Copland never joined any political party. However, even after he was cleared, there were consequences. A Republican firebrand named Fred Busbey shame- fully but successfully persuaded his col- leagues in the House to remove Copland's music from the planned Eisenhower inauguration in early 1953. In his own way, Copland was patri- otic, penning such quintessentially American works as Lincoln Portrait and Fanfare for the Common Man. More disturbing than Copland's hav- ing to face the HUAC was the disinte- gration of his memory as he succumbed to dementia. He began having memory slips in the mid-'70s, but by the 1980s, he was forgetting names and faces. Pollack sadly recounts how near the end of his life, Copland, once an avid reader, would sit for hours, staring at the same newspaper. Composer Ned Rorem recalls a time when Copland competently con- ducted Appalachian Spring in concert; but then had no recall of what had just been performed. However, the lingering portrait Pollack leaves us with is of an abun- dantly gifted, generous, patient man who for his 90 years made the world a more civil, cultured place.
